Day 8: Xishungbanna to Kunming

We started late today as the distance to be travelled was 538 kms. and the road from Xishunbanna to Kunming is an Expressway.
Today’s day was special day because we were going through so many tunnels. The tunnels are all through the mountains. We had one tunnel of 10 kms. length and one more of 5 kms.

The tunnels are very well made. The tunnels are well lighted and after 2 kms or so, there is some opening to allow fresh air and light to come. The tunnels were at an altitude of about 1900 metresThe roads are in excellent condition

The roads are constructed through the mountains and at that height it must have been challenging to construct the road and much more difficult to make tunnels.

As we reached Kunming, we found a very big lake, Dian lake, and the city looks very good. The infrastructure is very good. Kunming is the capital and largest city of Yunnan province in southwest China. Kunming is political, economic, communications and cultural centre of the Yunnan province. It is at an altitude of 1900 metres (6,234 feet) above sea level. Kunming has population of 6.6 millionIt is 29th big city in China. There are about 102 big cities in China with population of over 1 million.

Kunming was important during World War II as a Chinese military centre, American air base, and transport terminus for the Burma road was located here. With the rest day tomorrow we plan to see some places in city, if possible.

We reached hotel at 7:30 pm. Tomorrow would be a rest day. So, we can afford to sleep well and get up late in the morning.
