Day 23: Turpan to Kuqa

Today we have long journey for 650 kms. We start our day with the warm feelings in our hearts for the family who gave us very sweet and fresh watermelon yesterday when we were visiting Grape farms.

The journey was listless except that we were seeing the mountains all throughout the journey. These are called Folded mountains. These are so called because the water from the mountains after the snow melts comes down, over the ages, and have made their path in such a way that they looked folded in appearance.

Kuqa is a country in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region under the administration of Aksu Prefecture. It was once the homeland of the ancient Buddhist Kingdom of Kucha. It is at an elevation of 1,072m.  The Kuqa county is located at the southern periphery of the Tian Shah range, the northern portion of the Tarim Basin, and the centre of the autonomous region. It has a population of 4.5 lakhs.

We reached Kuqa at about 6 pm.
