Day 11: Nanning to Zhanjiang via Xuwen

The day started slowly as we decided to start at 8:30am. We took breakfast at our hotel. This is a rare possibility as we normally start by 5:30 or 6:30 and normally the breakfast would not be ready in the hotels. So, we take our breakfast in the car. But today we got opportunity to take breakfast in the hotel. It was a good spread of Chinese dishes with few western dishes.

The road, as usual in China, is superb. We went first to the Southern point of mainland China at Xuwen. We reached the point at about 3 pm. From here we could see the Ferries sailing and the place is looking more like a Fairy terminal. It appears that it is not promoted as a tourist attraction.

The idea of reaching Xuwen is to cover the country from Southern most point at Xuwen to Western most point at Kashgar, from where we cross in Kyrgystan about 15 days later. So, we are doing Cross country in China.

Xuwen is the Southern most county of Guangdong province. It is under the administration of Zhangjiang city. It is bordering the South China sea in the east and Beibu Gulf in the west. The mainland is separated from Hainan by 18-nautical-mile (33 km) wide Quinzhou Strait.

Zhanjiang literally means ‘Azure River’. Zhanjiang is a prefecture-level city at Southwest end of Guangdong province. It has a population of about 7 million (70 lakhs).

We reached hotel at about 6:30 pm. We had dinner and talked to some friend and relatives.

Tomorrow we plan to travel 610 kms. We plan to start at about 7:30am.
